Well, I’ve been listening to Brandon Sanderson lectures and I feel personally attacked by him.
I know we can’t just listen to authors talk and take everything as fact, all of the advice is subjective and we take what is helpful and break the rest of the rules. He did say something that was very helpful which was that I may be more of a discovery writer. I guess discovery writers sometimes have an outline but they write more start to finish, ish. They just dive in and go for it. A main crime of discovery writers is they tend to go back and revise chapters all the time before they are even done writing the first draft of the book and gettig the story out there, and so they may have written 100,000 words but most of those words are just… re doing old work we’ll probably have to go back and fix again once we are actually done writing the story.
Gosh! Well that’s something I am so guilty of, and so I decided NOT to do that. Maybe go change very small things, but I really need to just plow through the first draft and get it down, then go back and edit. Anyways since I decided that I’ve been writing quite a lot and have made lots of progress! I still have lots and lots to write but I’m not going to worry about going back until I’ve gotten to the end at least once.
Anyways that’s my update for today. 🙂
